Crossing Over Poem by Mary Champion

Crossing Over

Anxious and feeling like a stranger in my own skin,
I stood, disconsolate on the riverbank
watching the fallen leaves spinning in the current.
My life was ripe for a change.
Something nebulous was urging me to take the next step,
but it gave me no sense of the direction.
Right towards the sea?
Left towards the source?
or straight ahead into the river?
Undecided, I walked a few slow steps along the bank.
Then, struck by the futility,
I stopped and stared again into the hypnotic flow.
'Straight ahead! ' hissed my guide
'But tread with care'.

I stepped forward onto the mossy footbridge.
