Cujo Poem by Melinda Butterfield

Cujo

When Cujo ran away last night, the weather was a mess.
For it was New Year's Eve, and it was cold and dark at best.

I walked around the neighborhood, flashlight in hand to see
if I could catch a Glimpse of him or what had made him flee.

I called his name to no avail my voice fell on deaf ears.
And as the night progressed, it only heightened all my fears.

'Where is that Dog? ', I asked myself, 'What happened to him now? '
Did he get carried off by a hungry large Night Owl?

I must admit he had lost weight and was a tiny thing.
And so I cursed the Owl and the wind beneath his wing.

Coyotes howled throughout the night, at last my thoughts succumbed.
My Dear Poor Dog-Yes Cujo had become a breakfast crumb.

As Dawn approached my heart was numb, what will the sunrise Bring?
I couldn't bear the thought of what I'd find at New Year's gleam.

And so as I prepared myself for what would be the worst,
I heard a small Chihuahua had been found and wasn't hurt.

He'd run down to the Neighbor's porch and huddled there all night,
until the neighbor's dog began to bark at morning's light.

So from now on when he goes out, in short, 'To Be Relieved',
I'll keep him in my sight, forever more,
He'll be with me!
