David & Jonathan Poem by Michael P. Johnson

David & Jonathan

This man I met was not too tall
Slim built with pleasant pose
But yet his faith was all but small
That time would soon expose

I failed to like him at the start
I thought him proud and cold
But when I saw the child at heart
My love grew fast and bold

Wisdom’s virtue was not unknown
Knowledge beyond his years
He knew his God now on the throne
Could answer all his prayers

A warrior of prayer and sword
A friend to rich and poor
He preached of Jesus Christ his Lord
And taught of what was sure

In Christ alone he saw his course
Through Christ he saw The Light
And with the gospel as his source
He drew the will to fight

Our friendship grew beyond compare
We’d talk for many hours
We each had love we sought to share
Each time God blessed with showers

Seasoned with love’s most precious salt
In things of God so wise
Because his faith was not at fault
In Jesus’ arms he lies

My friend awaits his final call
Saving from death and hell
A living stone in Jesus’ wall
Who served his Master well
