Dawn Poem by Blanca Varela

Dawn

Upon awakening
I was surprised by an image that only yesterday had escaped me.
Same tree in the morning
and in the ditch
a bird drinking
all the gold of day.

That we are alive,
who would doubt it,
the laurel, the bird, the water
and I,
how I watch with thirst.
