Day's End Poem by Mary Champion

Day's End

As we turn our backs on the Sun,
leaving behind the last rays of its radiance,
the dark vault of the sky,
no longer veiled by the dazzling brilliance of day,
reveals itself to be studded
with countless twinkling jewels of starlight.

Slowly, the street-lamps begin to shine,
dimly illuminating the dark shadows
with their dusty, lustrous haloes.

On cloudless nights,
the moon reveals its ever-changing profile,
but its reflected glory
is no match for the fiery monarch of day-time.

Soft as silence,
the noiseless owl glides like a ghost
through the darkness,
mercilessly hunting its prey.
Urban foxes shatter the stillness
with their unearthly shrieks and wails,
so reminiscent of some human victim
that they trouble our sleep seeking minds.
Maybe we should investigate…

And as the silent majority
submerge themselves in slumber,
those who are fated to man the night hours
for our safety and convenience,
or with felonious intent,
set about their work.
