Days, Wishes, Kings Poem by Jean Renwick

Days, Wishes, Kings

Car alarm jump-starts the morn
The person who stayed last night now has gone.
Caffeine alert jangles in the veins:
A tug-of-war with that little voice – “love too may wane.”

We feel old with life’s lessons wrote large
On our skin, our minds, our hearts,
Before we’ve found where adventure lies.
Dreams often are strangled in barbs of another’s desires.

So if you must break the heart of one who loves you
Break it clean and not scattered about you
For our days are just wishes in the court of a King
And happiness like dust on a butterfly’s wing.
