Dear John Poem by Mary Champion

Dear John

When we were ten, my friend and I
had a major crush on you;
discussing at great length
how we could prove our love was true.
Though young and innocent back then,
we had the sense to see,
we pined in vain
for it was plain -
no reciprocity.

Six decades on,
our paths re-crossed
and straight away I knew -
no chemistry,
yet still I see -
what we once sensed in you.
