Deeper Well Poem by Mary Champion

Deeper Well

Rating: 5.0

The mind is prey to hubris,
riding high upon its horse.
But nemesis is ruthless
as it drowns you in remorse.

I believed I had solutions
hewed from logic and hard facts,
deterred the heart's intrusions,
kept emotions under wraps.

But hearts are not persuaded
that revenge is sweeter cold
and when desire invaded
it acquired a stranglehold.

The mind was subjugated
to the passion of the heart.
It feebly abdicated
as its reason fell apart.

Love shattered the foundations
that were built on shifting sands,
igniting conflagrations
with unreas'nable demands.

I found despair and heartbreak -
pride was thwarted and I fell.
My spirit felt the earthquake
as I plumbed a deeper well.
