Deer Jump Summer Walk Poem by thomas mofford

Deer Jump Summer Walk

Glacial erratic boulders-along
The steep river bank
Jack-in-the-pulpits, lady-slippers, horsetails
Fungi on trees like T V trays
Rusty barrel hoops in cellar holes with toppled chimney
Bottle-moonshine-still
Archaeological evidence-metalware-hardware-crockery
Tar paper shacks-roofing nails
Metal stove-rusty bedspring-past activity
Marine scene launching wharf remnants
Downed telephone poles
Giant elms wearing parasitic vines
Toppled Boy Scout fortress
Geological-glacial topography-terminal moraine
Quadrangled stone walls with boulders,
that didn't make it to the Lawrence Dam.
Sand pits-old oxen trails-water works
Red squirrels-chipmunks-skunk smells-bird songs
Hemlock cones by the thousands
Trees as grand as the virginal strands in the Smokies.
