Do Not Let The Slaves Read Poem by Cliff Phiri

Do Not Let The Slaves Read

Let them eat
but never let them sit.

Beat,
Poke out their eyes
and kill their voices.

Keep their heads down.

Keep them in need
And their baskets leaking.
Entertain them with smoke,
Make it their meditation!

Gird them with fear
And make your shadow a nightmare!

They fear heights,
they fear deep waters.
Keep them so!

Anytime they want to worship
let them go,
but not far!

The story of liberty should be a myth,
Freedom an impossibility;
Fables to kill time!

A thick blindfold,
And do not bring them to light.
Give them no time to think,
And please
Don't let them read!

They should eat
but not too much
Or they will not come back tomorrow.
A hungry dog is a loyal dog.....
