Dressed To Kill (The Magpie) Poem by Mary Champion

Dressed To Kill (The Magpie)

From the smart appearance
he might be the maitre d'
in some upmarket establishment.
From the assured manner,
the superior glance,
he is surely the Jeeves of the bird world.
But when he opens his throat,
the illusion shatters -
hear the raucous chatter of the fabled fishwife.
No gentleman this,
but a scavenging predator,
a marauding barbarian,
an avian yob.
