Drunken Koi Poem by Mohamed Nasir

Drunken Koi

My koi fish are swimming
as though they were drunk.
The groggy koi, poor fish,
brightly coloured one gold
and black two orange with
black spots another purely
white shimmering in sunlight.
Swimming sluggishly in a daze
uppedly at the surface
gasping for air almost dying.
Because by mistake
I pumped into the pond
too much chlorine water
and if they were humans,
if they drink and swim,
they might get drunk and drowned.
But my drunken koi won't drown.
Blank eyes lost graceful motion,
swimming lazily mouth open and shut
looking glum mumbling sadly who is
the bloody idiot that put too much
tap water into their pond.

I have a small pond I made myself enough for a couple of Koi fish. One day I let in too much water and the fish started to swim at the surface gasping for air. I was really afraid they might die. Fortunately they recovered.
