Eastern Statues Poem by Marcel Aouizerate

Eastern Statues

I have heard it was difficult to get there,

Direct flights fly from nowhere. People

Need to be close by to reach shore:

It is one of the places we need to know

Already to get to know again. I get

Why one would want to risk the vital

Contraptions of nature in a quest for

Culture. But what I see before all is

A gift shop the size of an entire island,

Offering souvenirs no one can carry home.

It may be the case that souvenirs are

In general fixed to the ground they dried up.

I don't know if that matters.

Aristophanes cast an essential nostalgia

Upon the cradle of early philosophy,

It was a wonderful idea to ask from

Everyone to deliver a speech in the praise

Of love. The gist of my encomium is that

I can picture Easter Island statues

On any given day. I understand

Why they contradicted themselves.
