Elegy For A Happier Time Poem by Pearl Walden

Elegy For A Happier Time

I wish we could have them back,
Those days of sitting together
On our huge flowery sofa
Reading stories out loud and
Giggling as we traced over big
Black button eyes on bears.

I wish they had never gone away,
Those evenings splashing bubbles
Around in our pale blue bath
Sticking foam letters on the tub
Sides before drying off with a
Fluffy white cotton towel.

I wish I could turn back time,
To lose those unhappy years when
Living became a chore and time
Was our enemy, never being
Plentiful and always devoid
Of hopes of second chances.

I wish I could sow clear drops
Of forgetting in your mind to undo
My countless transgressions which
Uncoil unbidden to strike at
Your soft and saddened soul
Deserving of so much more.
