Empty Vows Poem by Ifeanyi Uduma

Empty Vows

You promised me exclusivity, a love confined
But now your heart finds comfort in another's design
You said I'd be enough, but apparently, I'm not
Another's touch ignites what mine could not

My advances, irritating; hers, a welcomed flame
You find joy in kisses now that were never mine to claim
You whispered 'I love you' in my ear so sweet
But your heart belongs to ghosts

Reminded of past love, feelings you thought were true
Now finding them in her, not me, what am I to do?
You wanted me all to yourself, or so you claimed
But now my desire for you is selfish, your love's redefined

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem critiques the empty promises made by a lover, highlighting the pain and betrayal that follow. The speaker's voice is strong and accusatory, emphasizing the disparity between the lover's words and actions. The use of contrast ('you promised me exclusivity' vs. 'now your heart finds comfort in another's design') effectively highlights the lover's hypocrisy. The poem's themes of heartbreak, deception, and longing are timeless and universal.
