Enlightenment Poem by Priscilla Colon

Enlightenment

Driving like a bat into the night,
I looked into those eyes and all I saw was lies
Lips that spoke without rhythm and laughter that had no meaning
For I saw the truth, and there was no way I could turn back,
The truth is, all I see is light, and everyone else fades into the darkness
For I have seen what needs to be seen
Left unspoken words on your front door step
For I have arisen from the ashes of my past,
Lost into infinite shadows of others I found my way back to my soul,
Collapsed into myself and finally inhaled life back,
For this world may come down on me over and again
Nevertheless, I will not fall I will not break
For I lift the world above my head and say, "this is my life"
As I walk away I leave the other side where is should be,
The past does not define me but damn if it did not make me into the woman I am today.
