Evolutionary Dead End Poem by Mary Champion

Evolutionary Dead End

Far too clever for its measure of wisdom to control,
a restless ape stood upright and set out to seek its soul.
But life on earth was brutal for these hominid high-flyers
and they soon became diverted by their physical desires.
It wasn't just the sex of course, demanding though that is,
they needed food and shelter to enjoy the carnal bliss.
They used their ingenuity to keep them safe from harm
and it took a hundred thousand years to raise the first alarm.
The prophets tried to warn them, but no one believed a word -
'Us poisoning the Planet! That's alarmist and absurd'.
But the prophets kept on barracking with warnings dark and dire
'we've made the air unbreathable and set the place on fire! '
By now some ears were hearing them, but sadly for our race
they hadn't got the muscle or the means to save the place.
The ones with the capacity to save us from ourselves
were all in hock to Mammon and had shares in oil wells.
And so, despite the protests from the terrified and weak
there was no effective action as the numbers passed their peak.
Thus life would be extinguished in every form and shape
They hadn't built a life-boat and so no one could escape.
