Exploring Happiness #14- In Praise Of Writers Poem by June Stepansky

Exploring Happiness #14- In Praise Of Writers

Writers are the historians
of our failures.
Dickens showed us
English injustice and poverty.
Ibsen explored a Norwegian
woman’s search for equality.
Checkov depicted Russian loneliness.
Victor Hugo wrote of French cruelty.

In different cultures and
in different political climates,
the universal voice with which
all important writers speak
creates a contemporary song
which resonates in all
receptive hearts.

One writer may not always understand important truths, but many writers from many different countries and from many different centuries who all speak with a similar voice must be listened to with respect.
That is why it is important to be exposed to as much diverse literature as possible so that we may get a more complete picture of these complex, universal truths.
One important objective of many of the greatest writers is to show us the importance of being compassionate and understanding.
If the collective voices of great authors can help instill these vital qualities in many human hearts, they will have succeeded in the great task of influencing and humanizing a violent and dangerous world.

A man that seeks truth and loves it must be reckoned precious in any human society
Epictetus

Truth is a thing immortal and perpetual, and it gives to us a beauty that fades not away in time.
