Eyes Poem by Fela Payson

Eyes

If you close your eyes you can't see
You won't see how things could be
You close your eyes and shut your mind
You are mean and complain that they aren't kind
You shut your eyes and complain about being in the dark
You brawl and fight and then ask why you're not on Noah's ark
Open your eyes and maybe you'll look
Open your eyes and maybe you'll understand
That there's something written in the book
That life isn't so bland
Open your eyes and let the light swallow you
Close your eyes and the darkness will consume you
Peer deeper into the small things you do
Pay less attention to those who would wrong you
Open your eyes to the madness and cruelty of the world
Look closer where others would turn a blind eye
Look deeper into those who pass you by
Open your eyes and don't blink
Even when the air threatens to sting your eyes
Look closer at the smudged ink
Open your eyes, and you'll realise.
You'll realise there is no prize
You'll notice that rewards need to be sown by your own hands
You'll see houses feel more like home on your own lands
Open your eyes and just think
Think about how it'll all be over before you can blink
