False Memories Poem by Mary Champion

Was it really better then?
Or was I younger,
healthier
freer?
Was the world so much kinder then?
Or were ignorance,
naivety
a lack of experience
shielding me from the truth?
There were surely monsters then -
Hitler and Stalin!
But one was dead -
killed by his own hand
and the other hid behind the iron curtain.
There was Cruelty,
Want,
Ignorance
Injustice -
The world was not kinder
I was just blinder
and there was no social media.
