Tarry not now evenings come
and night stealthily follows you.
The moonless veil of darkness
all kinds of fear imbue.
Noises become sinister,
echoing in the night.
Every sound you make,
aggrandized causing fright.
Within your mind the battle
between common-sense and fear,
has set your heart a racing
as courage you commandeer.
Each step you take is longer
as you heed my wise advice.
It is not safe to linger
or danger you’ll entice.
That chill passing over you,
causing hairs on your neck to rise
was naught but a wisp of air.
What else would you surmise?
Though lights of welcome lie ahead
they seem so far away,
for night has pushed them out of sight,
as it did the light of day.
So when you hear the snap,
of a twig beneath your feet,
will you stand there frozen,
run forward or retreat?
Darkness overtakes you,
disguising all you know
and in this surreal situation,
the last of courage you forgo.
Running blindly straight ahead
you try to leave your fear behind.
Yet surely that’s not possible,
isn’t the fear all in your mind?
And then you hear a human voice,
reality is now in sight,
so you slow down to a saunter,
no longer fearful of the night.
