Fifth Month Lament Poem by Danielle Mari Nidea

Fifth Month Lament

One day, you found me in the dark.
Enigma was our charm.
You thought what you had made was art.
I sounded my alarm.
I thought it had been safe to say
We found our common home;
Yet at the end of every day,
You always were alone.

Why must the waters be so calm
In the center of your storm?
Why do you reassure my palm
And let me hold your arm
As you drag me through a maze
Only you could comprehend,
While I dream of another place
Another home, another land?

I never fit the puzzle piece.
I can't see through your eyes.
Yet you keep holding on to me
In hopes of a surprise.
Will your misplaced loyalty
Event to something good?
Or was it malicious comedy
That I misunderstood?

Regardless, please set me free.
Let me run among your grass
In hopes that I would come to be
Who I really am at last.
Don't fear that you might step on me;
I know the world is cruel.
And don't mock my naiveté
For you, too, are a fool.
