First Or Last Poem by Michael P. Johnson

First Or Last

Serving the bride, a man and wife
Had Heaven’s will in view
Walking in victory though this life
They saw what each should do

Depending on the work being done
Regardless night or day
Both hand in hand they’d work as one
Within their separate way

To all they were a great delight
They’d heard Their Saviour’s call
They tried to live their lives just right
And gave the bride their all

They’d give out books, they’d open doors
Bear witness on the street
They’d sweep and scrub the churches floors
To wash their brother’s feet

As first they’d come as last they’d leave
Willingly lending hand
Closer to Christ they sought to cleave
The test of time to stand

Another pair joined Jesus’ bride
At altar call one day
That self same night both couples died
With nothing more to say

The bibles tells this story clear
They’d enter Heaven’s Door
From death they had no need to fear
For Christ was with all four

For forty years had served the first
The second but one day
Yet each through Christ had quenched their thirst
And earned their penny pay
