For Amusement Only Poem by Andrew Wright

For Amusement Only

Extracts from letters to a girlfriend written by a POW.

1940

I am thinking of you dear, with an aching heart,
Wondering where you are now?
Striving to smile and play my small part,
Living the days out somehow.
Our long march is over, a camp reached at last,
God! ! ! How we needed that rest,
But I promise I'll write as I have in the past,
Trusting our love stands the test …..

1941

Our mail starts to come - letters from home,
I crave only one - that's from you ….
I hear my name called, my heart missed a beat,
There's not only one …. But two! ! !
Sweetheart, you can't realize the joy that they brought'
When I saw your handwriting again,
After reading them over and over…. I sought
Solitude down "Memory Lane"

1942

Two years have rolled on - (how time flies) ,
Since I last felt the thrill of your kiss,
But remember, darling, true love never dies,
And one day you'll have all you wish,
When I know that that you care, I've no worries at all,
In fact …. I don't give a "hoot".
I keep up my "Pecker", holler, and bawl,
One slogan …. That's "Roll on the boat".

1943

I can't understand why I don't hear from you,
‘Twas in June when I got your last letter,
Over-worked? … tired? … so much to do?
… Or have you found someone else better?
Then New Year's Day brings that letter I pine,
I snatch it …. With heart beating wild,
But my eyes fill with tears as they fix on that line,
Married …. Expecting a child.

1944

So I am writing this with a heart of Stone,
Callous …. you'll say, and unkind ….
But my dreamboat will sail tho' I pilot alone,
Till a mate for the Skipper I find,
I'm awaiting the day when once more I'll be free,
For then I can do as I please,
And I'll soon find another to sit on my knee,
Who'll respond to my cuddle and squeeze ….

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Andrew Wright was a Prisoner of War, captured at Dunkirk. This poem is taken from a notebook he kept while in the POW camps. It is difficult to believe that the writers of all of these poems were men who had in the main left school at the age of 14. Where he attributes the poem to an individual I have included that attribution. Andrew Wright died in 1987. These poems were uploaded by his son.
