Friends Poem by Claire Taggart

Friends

Your eyes tell no lies
You believe the next drink will soften the blow
Carry you off to a place where tears do not flow

Your confidence grows
Centre of attention
Your blurred vision can't block out memories
Was that something they forgot to mention

Friends is that what they are?
They watch you drown your sorrows
Then guide you to your car

You drink til you can no longer stand
Trip
Stumble
Hit the ground
Open up your heart some more
This they will choose to ignore

Wasted words to those who do not listen
They won't offer you their hand
Even when your bright eyes glisten

In need of saving
To weak to try
Drink has a far greater craving
But this you will deny

They leave you wrapped in shame
The night before was just the same
Tomorrow another day
Another deadly game you choose to play
