Garri Poem by Stanley Onome Oyibode

Garri

Garri the killer of hunger!
The only friend that fight my battles,
You give hope when there is none,
You kill our hunger when we are hungry
You hide our shame even at the peak of it.
Garri! you are a life saver.

Killer of hunger!
Our source of unity,
The meeting point of the universe,
The symbols our race.
The thought of you makes us smile like Okoiyawo.

Oh! Garri.
Both the rich and poor respect you,
Old and young adore you.

Killer of hunger!
Our savior,
Our strength,
A reliable friend,
Even though the PHCN of our generation interrupt,
I fear no evil for Garri is with me.

As a child growing up in the Delta region of my country [Nigeria], Garri was the only friend I had,
as a student both in college and at the University, Garri was there for me.[Garri is a kind of food produce from cassava] After the poem was written, the poet celebrated Eba Day (eba is made from garri) with his friends at University of Ibadan.
