Goalposts Poem by Robyn Chiswell

Goalposts

'So then, what's new with you? '
You're stumped at what to say
So you give a vague answer
Then more questions come your way
When are you getting married?
Surely now is the time
Been together long enough
For wedding bells to chime
Why on earth do you pay rent?
Throwing money down the drain
Paying someone else's mortgage
Is that not just such a pain?
Why don't you stop that now
And buy a place of your own?
Get yourself on that ladder
A cottage made of stone
How many bedrooms will you want?
As I'm sure you'll soon need more
To fit in lots of babies
They can't sleep on the floor!
Your body clock is ticking
Can you afford to wait?
You should get started right away
Before it is too late
You are left with a strange feeling
That you've not achieved in life
Goalposts too far to meet
Do I want to be wife?
Can't we just measure success
By things more achievable
Rather than these goal posts
Realistic and believable
You got of bed on time
Congratulations to youl
You didn't snooze your alarm
Or pretend you have the flu
You're such a domestic god
You've made your bed today
Washed up the plates and cups
AND you've put them all away
Today you took on a task
Much larger than the rest
Shaved all the hair off your legs
Now you really look your best
It's the last day of the month
You've really made it now
You've not run out of money
You've made it through somehow
Now when you lay in bed
At the end of a long day
You can say under your breath
'I am a success, hooray! '
