Outside the blizzard rages
and the winter chill invades my room.
But I luxuriate beneath my down-filled duvet,
relishing the contrast
as I wait for sleep to claim me.
Then, from out of nowhere,
as my thermostat stutters,
a floodtide of heat sweeps through me-
chest;
neck;
face -
I feel the burn.
My heart races
as I fling off the stifling covers.
My restless legs are ready for flight,
but I am going nowhere.
Wide awake now
I toss and turn
as the heat slowly dissipates-
I shiver and recover.
Drowsily warm - I seek sleep once more -
until the heat returns.
