Helgeland Norway's Mountain Myth. Poem by Tor Magnor Solvang

Helgeland Norway's Mountain Myth.

On Nordland's coast, where fjords embrace,
The mountains rise with timeless grace.
A tale unfolds, in sunlit haze,
Of trolls and giants, in ancient days.

Hestmannen rode, with heart aflame,
For Lekamøya, whispered her name.
He chased her fast, with fiery might,
Beneath the stars of the Nordic night.

Her fear took flight, across the land,
The Seven Sisters, hand in hand.
They danced and fled, with hearts so sore,
From Hestmannen, forevermore.

An arrow flew, a deadly dart,
To pierce her heart, and tear apart
The fleeing maiden, swift and free,
Beside the wild and stormy sea.

But Sømna's King, with watchful eye,
His hat he flung, against the sky.
The arrow struck, with piercing sound,
And Torghatten's hole was then renowned.

The sun arose, a golden burst,
The trolls were caught, in silent thirst
For darkness lost, and shadows deep,
Forever frozen, in eternal sleep.

Torghatten stands, a lonely peak,
The wind sings songs, secrets speak.
Of love and chase, and frozen fear,
A legend whispered, year by year.

The Sisters stand, in silent row,
Their stony faces, soft and low.
And Lekamøya, finds her rest,
A mountain form, upon earth's breast.

The scientists, with learned gaze,
Explain the rocks, in factual ways.
Of ice and time, and grinding stone,
A landscape carved, uniquely shown.

But close your eyes, and let it be,
A world of magic, wild and free.
Where trolls still roam, in mountains high,
Beneath the vast, unending sky.
