Her Own Way Poem by Vanessa Dizon Alvarez

Her Own Way

She walked where grasses touched her knees,
The sky above was calm and free.
A tiny moon, a breeze so kind,
She left the noisy world behind.

They told her, "Don't be bold or loud, "
"Stay quiet, fit in with the crowd."
But in her heart, a voice would say,
"You have the right to choose your way."

She tried to please, she tried to bend,
But felt so lost, it wouldn't end.
Until the wind began to sing,
"You're free to live, to laugh, to dream."

"It's your own life, so make it shine,
No need to ask for some old sign.
Let go of guilt, let joy begin,
Be true to you, and grow within."

She smiled and stood with open eyes,
No longer chasing others' skies.
She danced beneath the moon so small,
And lived her life — her life, her all.
