Heroes Poem by Mary Champion

Heroes

Harried by the horrid clamour of battle,
hardly time to think of the fear -
yet filled with it-
they press forward.
Too proud to retreat,
too scared of defeat
to give up.
OD'd on adrenaline
they surpass their own expectations.
Overriding the terror
that threatens to overwhelm them.
they fight on -
some to victory
and some to oblivion.
But, victors or vanquished,
all are heroes.
Their duty done,
their hardest battle won -
The struggle with their own fearful hearts.
