Honest Appraisal Poem by Mary Champion

Honest Appraisal

So this is it…
the death of hope.
The light dims and
the future darkens.
The road ahead
drops into an abyss of despair.
I fall to my knees,
no longer motivated
to put one foot in front of the other.
There will be no release.
Nothing will ameliorate the agony
of being human.
I cannot escape!
What is behind,
overshadows what is now,
but is unreachable - untouchable -
denied access by the fatal march of time.
What looms ahead is more of the same-
or worse -
I have wasted 70 years getting here,
deluding myself that
I might make sense of it all.
Now I see that it is mere nonsense
and I am nothing but a fool.
