Hoping Poem by Chance Foreman

Hoping

The patio seating area
Was full
The seats were full
The tables were full
The air was full of conversation
I watched as mouths spilled out words
Which hung for a moment
Unruffled by the breeze
And then without anybody seeming to notice
Dissolved into the world.
I keep hoping to hear something
I have been sitting in many crowded areas
Watching words rise and fall for a long time
I keep hoping today is the day
But now all is empty
Save for a patch of sunlight
Where three sparrows are taking a dust bath

...they must know something we don't.
