Hoping For Everything But Expecting Nothing
Sitting here looking at these four bare walls
Wondering how my dreams ever got so small
Were they just borrowed and never given back
What's left of them I carry in a brown paper sack
Too much time spent living on my own
Wondering if I'll ever find my way back home
Did I drink too much or was it lost in the big spill
Hanging out at Joe's with too much time to kill
Quandries and dilemmas just keep on piling up
Bottle's running empty, so who gets the last cup
Looking for the way out but always running into something
I've been hoping for everything but expecting nothing
It's a dark time in the world these days
Waiting to see which way the politics play
While the god of war is sleeping on the shore
Don't wake him until we know who bought the store
Too many fools lying about what they're bringing
Too many dying while many others are singing
Too many take advantage with a message that is stinging
They speak about the future while to the past they're clinging
If you want to worship Hollywood I guess the joke's on you
Too many movies being made just based on dogma stew
A bombastic smile and a flippant mouth are what it's about
But don't you dare upset them else they will cry and pout
When life hands you a lemon and you don't like lemonade
You can't just stand around looking for some shade
I'm looking for the way out but always running into something
I've been hoping for everything but expecting nothing
