Hubble Bubble Poem by Owen Cullimore

Hubble Bubble

Hubble Bubble toil and Trouble
A penny for your thoughts she used to say
A little wrinkled old lady down the lane
Named Dorothy who lived not too far away
She lived in a little old Ramshackled cottage
With her rather large cat she called Moonlight
Who would look at you through his big black eyes
And could give people such an awful fright
She had a rather large old Cauldron
Over the fireplace in her old kitchen in pride of place
And at the back of the room stood a big black AGA Stove
Which you could just make out in the cold dark space
Which occasionally belched black smoke into the room
That's why the windows were always left ajar
Once seen she was never forgotten
But people still come to see her from near and far
She could cure Warts and other ailments
From her magic box of potions
Made from Plants and Flower seeds and Stinging Nettles
And all other kinds of notions
Her bodyguard Moonlight was always on hand
Sitting nearby to glare at those who came to call
She always looked a fearsome sight
To deter those who would cause her mistress any harm at all
Dorothy became well known for many miles around
Many visited to have their ills cured
And this carried on for many a year
As long well as Dorothy's health was assured
Huddled over her cauldron chanting her chants
With Moonlight looking on wondering what was going on
Mixing her potions from the flowers and the plants
Her cure all's were well known throughout the town
But not everyone believed in what Medicine's Dorothy was giving out
Including the very Reverend Eli Brown
Who was always ratty because of his Gout
He was definitely not a happy chappie
And also with the local Doctors it did raise a question or two
But people did not care they trusted her judgement as to what they were given
It helped them and their ailments get through
And Dorothy continued with her medicines for most of her life
With Moonlight watching intently
Through all the trouble and strife
He always purred and listened contently
The roof needed repairing, a few tiles were loose
Her little old Cottage had seen better days
Just like Dorothy who was now getting on in age
Both she and her old cat were both getting to the end of their ways
Sadly one day a customer called round to collect some of Dorothy's potions
Saw Moonlight her Cat lying peacefully asleep on the floor
And Dorothy seemingly dead in a chair
Together the pair of them forevermore
