Hunter Poem by Mary Champion

Hunter

Still some distance away,
the hunter edged towards his prey,
single-mindedly seeking the unwary.
Then something spooked his quarry,
which quivered and took flight.
There would be no climax tonight.

The thrill of the kill eluded him.
His luck had abandoned him.
His hunger nagged and gnawed -
how cruelly it clawed.
Tonight, he was denied his due -
tomorrow, he would bring down two.
