Darkness closes in as the forest trees tower above me.
The last beams of sunlight come in spots to color
and play with the grass and leaves.
I run swiftly through the forest,
never making a sound at all.
I am trying to escape the Predator
that has been stalking me since early fall.
I come to the edge of an open field
and pause to smell the air.
I can smell his musky Human scent
and the smell of used gunpowder.
I cross the field cautiously, yet desperately,
seeking a place to hide.
Again, I reach the forest land. I come to a ravine
and I leap across to the other side.
I am an animal of the wild
one that is hunted and maimed.
Some humans even try to keep us, although,
at heart we can never be tamed.
I AM DEER.
