I Bet Poem by Janine Alyssa Navarro

I Bet

I allowed your hands
to cradle me in bed
Even if I know
You might not be there
When the sun rises
The machines stir us awake
Your eyes turn back to grey
Leaving your essence
Hanging by the doorknob
My lungs sigh heavily
I feel a patch of my soul
Pop like a bubble

Shoving the blankets
Away from my warm body
Your kisses still trace
Across my wanting skin
I’ve always yearned
For everything concerning you
These walls have warned me
But I never cared
I looked at the spot
Where you once stood
You left with no word
And never came back

I don’t know who you are
But I bet you don’t either
