I Can't Breathe Poem by B. V. Dahlen

I Can't Breathe

Those chilling words, I fear
repeated many times a day
in hospitals, to caretakers, This time
gasped into a filthy curb
and mocked as life escaped a man
trapped and pinned by heedless beasts
intent on crushing his humanity
George was not protected
A white-skinned man would never need
to fear such a death
lynched by a knee in daylight
I and my race are saved
from that perversion by history.
a need by lesser men
to subjugate those they can
to make them feel superior
a badge, a metal wand and gun
that somehow
in his mind
raises this savage
above the man he murderd.
