If My Past Was Not Mine Poem by Betty Stoneman

If My Past Was Not Mine

Could I be in your world
if my past was not mine?
If each layer of frost uncovered
and embedded in dark years
could be warmed by purity
and sunned by yearning
melting the icy obstacles
of devious impossibility
Could I be in your world
if my past was not mine?
If the treasures of wisdom
sparkled underneath
distant murky depths
with the radiance of hope
reflected in eager eyes
and an uncertain smile
Could I be in your world
if my past was not mine?
If every secured thought
chained by moral restraint
and controlled by humility
could captivate an interest
held captive by curiosity
revealing unguarded intentions
Could I be in your world
if my past was not mine?
