I'll Pass Poem by Mary Champion

Who was it who devised this style?
Who thought such poems would beguile?
I think he should be put on tri'l,
then sent to prison for a while,
there to reflect why verse so vile
has oft been known to raise a smile.

The prospect made the sadist smile.
Such cruelty is just his style.
His instincts, always base and vile,
no wonder that it doth beguile
him, when we sit a while
and undergo this tiresome tri'l.

In English this form is a tri'l,
but in Italian you can smile
and write sestinas all the while.
It's great for that linguistic style.
The words have endings that beguile
and no one ever finds them vile.

The sadist hatched a plot quite vile,
but needed first to run a tri'l,
so sent a missive to beguile.
(Behind his hand he hid a smile.)
Said 'write some verses in this style,
‘twill only take a little while.'

Some poets thought that they would while
away some time, that dragged so vile,
and write some verses in the style.
But sad to say, it proved a tri'l.
The sadist smiled a broader smile -
so proud was he of all his guile.

It might beguile for just a while,
might raise a smile, but it is vile.
I‘ve done the tri'l. I hate this style!
