In April - Poem by James Hearst

This I saw on an April day:
Warm rain spilt from a sun-lined cloud,
A sky-flung wave of gold at evening,
And a cock pheasant treading a dusty path
Shy and proud.

And this I found in an April field:
A new white calf in the sun at noon,
A flash of blue in a cool moss bank,
And tips of tulips promising flowers
To a blue-winged loon.

And this I tried to understand
As I scrubbed the rust from my brightening plow:
The movement of seed in furrowed earth,
And a blackbird whistling sweet and clear
From a green-sprayed bough.

It's funny how you can tell in a line or two that you have found a new poet who is sure to pluck your heart-strings like you're his favorite violin and have been all his life. Then you see that he has only one poem registered on this site and THAT is NOT funny. I want more and I want it now, so let's walk a parade of protest to the headquarters of PoemHunter and demand more poems by him... if he hasn't met some untimely death (Report) Reply

This poem shows a lot of promise, but where is the poet's other work? A total of one poem submitted, and that one more than 13 years ago. He probably never logs in here anymore, and will never know that this poem was chosen as poem of the day. (Report) Reply

All that we see and miss has been brought out so beautifully here. Only a sensitive and skilled poet can do it. Loved reading it. Thank you for sharing. (Report) Reply

The beauty, mystery and wonder of nature is a constant inspiration. This is a true poet who knows how to use imagery and a nuanced message. (Report) Reply
