Include The Knower In The Known Poem by Mary Champion

Include The Knower In The Known

We could not have borne it - the brutal truth
that so many eons would have to pass
between the ignorance of naive youth
and the day when gnosis was in our grasp.

*

Perhaps, to give us some sense of purpose,
and the emollience of endless hope.
deluded clerics were sent to serve us
with specious promises to help us cope.

In desperation, we blindly followed -
too scared to argue when they threatened Hell.
It's hard to credit the crap we swallowed
when we were under their suspect spell.

But some souls discovered a sense purpose -
the scrap of insight they were born to find.
They had no time for religious service,
though very often they were just as blind -

convinced salvation was round the corner,
could not accept that it would take so long.
E'en so their knowledge began to order
the cryptic chaos we had read so wrong.

We began to question the dodgy doctrines,
we allowed sweet reason to venture in.
We weaned ourselves off their noxious nostrums,
were less distracted by supposèd sin.

*

Our store of knowledge grew ever greater,
but our understanding lagged woefully.
We'd failed to grasp that our human nature
is the key to solving the mystery.
