Indian Sunrise Poem by Sangeetha Pandaram

Indian Sunrise

The Sun Rises
Temple over temples
Presiding golden over morning
Awakening cow-eyed to the day

From mountain peak to pathways steep
In shifting sands the mystic seeks
And within each heart the passion to pray

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this poem as my daughter and I made our way from Macleod Ganj(Dharmsala) to Delhi. It is a magnificent journey that spanned sunrise to sunset. 'A thick shroud of mist blankets the world as our driver skillfully manipulates every bend and bridge. Visibility is limited to 20 meters. The roads are rural; we drive past vegetable stalls, roadside cafes, signs advertising AIRTEL and IDEA, an eating house called Ganesh Vaishno Dhaba, past multi-coloured ladies carrying logs on their heads, over bridges and dry river beds, lonely motorbikes and 'REVEL DETERGENT' painted in blue on a huge rock. The road is long and endless; winding, curving into untold roadside treasures... a glimpse of a temple, delectable sweetmeat stalls, a signboard which says Delhi 348 km, a signboard which says Welcome. There is no sound apart from blaring horns and the Desiboys singing Tu Mera Hero on the radio. The mist finally lifts giving way to a cow ambling by and the luscious fields of Punjab. The sun flashes across our path and our driver stops to pay the toll fee and we drive on, into the Indian sunset into the early Delhi evening.'
