Into The Night Poem by Jean Renwick

Into The Night

Stillness in the silence of dusk,
darkness falling o’er its inhabitants.
Barely breathing I crave just a glimpse of you.
More really, but I dare not hope.
I’ll wait here by the archway until you appear.
Waiting with the moonlight.
And when you do, I see your harried expression
and ache to calm you, caress the tenseness away.
Any second and your sweeping glance will behold me.
Will you stop? knowing who I wait for,
what I wait for.
Perhaps you sense my presence for a smile plays
across your lips before lifting your eyes
that see through to my soul.
I feel them peel back the layers and tug
gently at my heart.
For a fleeting moment I feel exposed, then I am drowning,
taking you with me to a place unknown.
Held there beyond our control, suspended in time,
we close the distance between us. Are we really moving?
Yes, I believe you have come here for me,
a silently asked and answered question.
We share a smile and a kiss, then the world returns to us.
Leaving the shadows, we wander under the stars,
our separate paths now merge, become as one silver thread
entwined, reaching far into the horizon.
