It's America,1995 Poem by Roger Gerald Hicks

It's America,1995

It's equal opportunity.
Including n____,
there are more
names for people of color
than Eskimo words for snow.

"I was beaten and
robbed at an ATM by two
black thugs, "
I tell a white fellow worker.
(That's how it happened.)
He shudders, ponders.

Later, relating my pain
to a black friend-
he solemnly utters:
"I'm sorry."

Staring back,
comprehending fully,
I hug him.
"Me too, " I reply.
