It Was Your Idea 2 Poem by Mary Champion

It Was Your Idea 2

It was your idea in the first place -
you said we shouldn't be joined at the hip,
or live in each other's pockets. I'm quick
to pick up on signals. I couldn't face
looking a fool, making naive mistakes.
I would have happily tightened my grip,
but was careful not to let that fact slip -
played it cool and took it all with good grace.
I was new to the relationship scene,
was blindly feeling my way through the dark.
Several years down the line, you changed your mind,
but I had changed too in the time between.
You'd been right at the start, with your remark.
You see, our stars never had been aligned.
