It Was Your Idea Poem by Mary Champion

It Was Your Idea

It was your idea -
we shouldn't be joined at the hip -
live in each other's pockets -
that's what you said.
I acquiesced,
our relationship was too new to risk,
by coming on too strong,
even though I was not averse to being pocketed -
connected - back then.
Took you at your word
and kept my distance.
Eventually you changed your mind,
but so had I.
Turned out you were right in the first place.
We didn't really fit.
