It's Too Hard To Choose Poem by Mary Champion

The modern age can't countenance
the man born to be king.
So how to choose a head of state?
It's not an easy thing.

No politician - that's for sure -
they're power mad we know.
Celebrity? No, most of them
have PR men in tow.

If you do it by election,
it's probable you'll find,
that the ones who seek position
won't be the noble kind.

And the public who elect them,
misled by tabloid news,
will choose the one whose promises
best suit their short-term views.

We could suggest a lottery.
But that's to risk a lot.
God knows what we'd be landed with-
far worse than what we've got.

The Dalai Lama's chosen when
he's but a tiny mite,
selected by the chosen few,
so that cannot be right.

 
For who would choose the chosen few?
And then who would choose them?
It's open to corruption so
we need to think again.

Philanthropists are candidates,
but which ones - that's the thing?
Some do it to avoid the tax,
some virtue signalling.

So, what about great scientists,
philosophers and such?
In theory they're worth a bet -
but are they out of touch

with those who lack a super-brain?
Great intellect is like
great wealth, for it can isolate.
So that would not be right.

We could invent an avatar -
King Arthur just for one -
combine him with the other folk
who're known for good they've done.

But whence would come unflawed A-I?
with just imperfect men
and women writing software for
our ‘perfect' regimen.

I long have been republican,
think thrones are out of date,
but can't think of a fool-proof way
to choose a head of state.
