Lonely Wait Poem by Herman Sequira

Lonely Wait

The doomed soul is so lonely that he is anxious even for the company of the ferryman (Charon) who will take him across the river Styx, into Hades. (Greek Mythology) At least he will have the company of other doomed souls.

My wretched soul, no prayer sought;
My evil life hath darkness wrought
And here, my spirit broken, weak,
Finds not the resting place I seek.

Here I await in this dark dell,
The final crossing into Hell.
Hasten, ferryman, come for me;
This lonely soul needs company.

The Styx remains so still, so deep
While I, my lonely vigil keep.
No sound, no splash from Charon's oar
Approaching from the other shore.

I've waited for a thousand years
And still no ferryman appears.
Perhaps this is my final fate...
To sit here and forever wait.
